Mac OS 10.15.x Notes To start with let me say the only reasons I use a Mac computer are Cubase and Affinity Photo. Cubase may be up for grabs because Reaper is a pretty good DAW and they currently have a Linux beta version. My axe-to-grind relationship with Steinberg is that the upgrade to Cubase 10.5 Pro required that I upgrade from MacOS 10.13 to 10.15--Catalina. That created a steaming pile of **&%$# on my desktop. I came to Mac World from 12 years working with Linux, FreeBSD, and Plan 9; granted, fun time sinks that they were, they had no serious DAW and photo processing was early GIMP: powerful but tough to learn, maintain, and missing some features. So, in 2007, or there abouts, I got a Mac. My last 5 years of using Linux required me to move back to Slackware--my intro to Linux--because Red Hat, SuSe, Ubuntu, et al had decided they wanted to be M$ or Apple more than anything else in the world. Don't get me wrong, I like Slackware, but Linux has become a little weird. The BSD variations seem more Unix-like these days. I digress. OK, let's get back to the evil OS, or at least the penultimate evil OS, MacOS 10.x.x. Let's face it, Apple's a contender but M$ still rules the computer Deep Evil world. For Mac users who like to work with old Unix/Linux/BSD tools, you're officially screwed. Slowly, since Leopard, they've been killing off apps like gcc, bash, and now, emacs. There's a GUI version online that has a Ruby launcher ... GUI and Ruby for god's sake. So far it doesn't launch anything and I'm stuck with a GUI interface to emacs. %$#&!!!. I'm waiting to see when Apple kills off Libre Office, X11, and then starts killing off 3rd party, commercial software like Cubase, Affinity Photo, etc.. I currently use no Apple apps that aren't essential to the operation of their crap system; I don't use iTunes (now called Music), Safari, Photos, Logic, no office suite offered by Apple, Contacts, Calender, Mail, Messages, etc.. I use XLD, VLC, Firefox, Affinity Photo, Cubase, Protonmail--which includes a calender and a list of email contacts, LibreOffice, and some other odds and ends. I DO NOT USE AN IPHONE! I use a cheap Android duhvice, even though Google is a nasty collection of assholes, too. Stay tuned. This is a work in progress; less tirade, more specifics to come.
